Hop on our luxury air-conditioned bus and explore the historical sites with our licensed English speaking guide. Our day starts off at the Panathenaic Stadium or Kallimarmaro, the original venue of the first Olympic Games back in 1896. Next come Zappeion Hall, for which approximately 80,000 sq. meters of public land were available by the Parliament of the Hellenes back in 1869, and the colossal Temple of Olympian Zeus, which took 683 years to complete.

Up next, we have the distinguished Athens Trilogy, consisting of three treasured samples of Athenian neoclassical architecture: the University of Athens, the Academy and the National Library.

As we move on to the National Garden, once known as the Royal Garden or the Garden of Amalia, we reach the Arch of Hadrian, a monumental gateway entirely build of Pentelic marble. Pass by St. Paul’s Church, the Hellenic Parliament and the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, the memorial sculpted in the early 1930s in dedication to Greek fallen war heroes, and carry on to the Numismatic Museum, housing one of the greatest collections of ancient and modern coins in the world. Out of the comfort of our modern bus, you will also take a gander at the Catholic Cathedral, the Old Parliament, the Constitution Square and the imposing Russian Orthodox Church.

Having withstood the ravages of time and war, the ancient citadel of the Acropolis follows next, a feast for the eyes and minds of travelers from across the globe. On foot, we will explore the Propylaea Gateway, mounting the steps built into the natural rock and truly appreciating the construction efforts put into this impressive structure so long ago. Discover the Temple of Athena Nike and the Parthenon, certainly the finest monument on the Acropolis in terms of both conception and execution. Visit the Erechtheum, famous for its intricacy and superb attention to detail, as you weave your way through cornerstones of ancient history and civilization with the help of your expert guide.

The celebrated Odeon of Herodes Atticus and the Theatre of Dionysus, at the foot of the Acropolis, will grace our paths as we continue to the award winning Acropolis Museum which houses unique attractions, including the Caryatids and the Parthenon’s frieze, metopes and pediments. Skip the admission line and proceed to explore up-close the incredible collection of significant ancient artifacts.

We will then proceed to a local restaurant at the foot of the citadel for some traditional delicacies and a chance to relax and consolidate the incredible memories forged in the historical center before off we go again, aboard our modern comfy bus, to escape the city confinements.

Take a relaxing coastal drive on the Athens Riviera, along the palm fringed seaside, as we pass by the most upscale southern suburbs of Vouliagmeni, Varkiza, and Glyfada.

Cape Sounion, where the horizon meets the Aegean Sea, is our final destination on this full day tour, located about 70 kilometers (43 mi) southeast of the capital. Legend has it that it marks the spot where King Aegeus waited solemnly for his son Theseus to return after his escapades with the mythical Minotaur but when he mistakenly believed that his son had perished, flung himself into the sea and drowned.

The cape is where one of the most photographed monuments of Greece, the Temple of Poseidon, sits, in reminiscence of the Golden Age of Athens. Perched at a height of about 60 meters (200 ft), it offers a panoramic breath-taking view and stands in honor of the God of the Sea and brother of Zeus, Poseidon. One of the twelve Olympians, he was the protector of seafarers and of many Hellenic cities and colonies.

Standing on the holy grounds of the trident bearing god, gazing out to the majestic ocean, you will agree that it is indeed a wonderful ending to an enriching day immersed in ancient and modern architecture, unique historical sites and unforgettable memories.

Tips by a local

In the summer time, expect mostly hot weather in Greece during the day and cooler in the evening so for such a walking tour up on the Acropolis hill and at Cape Sounion, we highly recommend that you opt for comfortable walking shoes, sun glasses, a hat and loose clothing. Keeping a small cool bottle of water in your bag is also a good idea while we explore the renowned ancient ruins and the historical cape. As always, let’s not leave our accommodations without sunscreen no matter which fun tour or multi-day tour we choose: better to be safe than sorry when you are vacationing in or visiting our warm and sunny country.
