Two Day Tour from Athens to Delphi

A trip to the center of the earth

A long time ago in the land of legend, the all might father of men and gods, Zeus, sought out the center of the world. He released two eagles from the ends of the world and at the spot where their paths met, he declared to have discovered the “navel of the earth”, or the “omphalos” (navel of Gaia). That is where this fascinating two day tour will take you; to one of the most significant archeological sites of Greece, the mystical Delphi.

Meet us at your hotel lobby in Athens and climb aboard our luxury air-conditioned bus as we embark on a two day break from the capital’s hectic rhythms.

We will make our way through the rolling plain of Boeotia and stretch our legs at the famous city of Thebes, birthplace to the tragic King Oedipus and to the divine hero Hercules. Thebes was a major rival of ancient Athens, and is said to have sided with the Persians during the 480 BC invasion under Xerxes.

As we approach Delphi, we will be immersed in the deep seeded spirituality of the pan-Hellenic sanctuary during what is promised to be an unforgettable visit. The archeological site, listed on UNESCO’s World Heritage List, occupies an impressive area on the south-western slope of Mount Parnassus, overlooking the coastal plain to the south and the valley of Phocis.

Our expert English speaking guide will escort you to the Castalia Spring, in the ravine where the contestants to the Pythian Games, pilgrims seeking consult with the famous Delphic Oracle and even Pythia herself cleansed themselves and quenched their thirst.

Discover the archeological site’s astonishing monuments and travel back in time when state-cities competed to win Apollo’s favor and demonstrated their fundamental Hellenic unity. Priests dedicated hymns to him, called paeans, and the famous oracle Pythia spoke in his voice, advising kings, generals and everyday people.

This important legacy of ancient civilization blends harmoniously with the splendid landscape and carries sacred meaning. Discover the monument of the Argive Kings, the Athenian Treasury, the Stoa of the Athenians, the Polygonal Wall, the monument of Platea and of course the Temple of Apollo, an imposing structure of Doric order which underwent several incarnations, serving as testament to the architectural and cultural prowess of the ancient world. In the inner hestia (hearth) of the Temple of Apollo, an eternal flame burned. After the battle of Plataea, the Greek cities extinguished their fires and brought new fire from the hearth of Greece, at Delphi. Explore the ruins of the forecourt of the temple where 147 Delphic maxims, aphorisms attributed to Apollo, were once inscribed.

The Athena Pronaia Sanctuary is, without doubt, the most characteristic monument at Delphi. This circular building of unknown purpose serves as a masterpiece of Classical architecture.

Take a stroll over to the Delphi Museum, which hosts the frieze of the Treasury of the Siphnians, considered to be the first religious structure made entirely out of marble. On display you will also find the colossal Sphinx of Naxos, the Statue of Antinous, who perished under mysterious circumstances, and the metopes of the Athenian treasury. Other cornerstones of ancient history on the permanent exhibit list include the notable bronze Charioteer and a plethora of other artifacts.

You will then have the afternoon off to see the sights in the rest of the area at your own leisure before we turn in for the night for some well deserved shut-eye.

On the next morning, you will be free to continue your exploration of these unique grounds, at your own pace.  It is certainly worth not leaving a stone unturned. On our way back to Athens, we will pass by the lively traditional village of Arachova, a cosmopolitan winter destination perched on the south slopes of Mount Parnassus, known for its traditional hand-woven wool rugs and quilts, gourmet foods and local wines.
