Meet us at your Athens hotel lobby and climb onboard our comfortable bus to port. Once you find yourself aboard the boat, sailing away to undoubtedly one of the most popular destinations on the planet, breathe in the sea breeze, get lost in the deep blue, “let you hair down” and get ready to discover the unforgettable precious gem of the Aegean, the crescent-shaped paradise island of Santorini, or “Thera” as it is colloquially called.

Thousands of years ago, immense volcanic eruptions gave birth to this masterpiece, a caldera (or crater) fringed to the east by towering immense cliffs, with colorful beaches contrasting crystal waters and a veritable mirror to reflect hues of red, yellow and orange rays of the setting sun.  Today, you will be mesmerized by the sheer energy of this sought retreat, erupting with charm, dotted with white-washed traditional houses against a spectacular backdrop of deep blue waters and exotic black, red and white sandy beaches.

Ancient Greek mythology spins a different tale of the birth of Santorini, or, as it was first called, “Kallisti”, meaning “the most beautiful”. Euphemus, one of Poseidon’s sons who was granted the ability to walk on land by his father, had joined the Argonaut expedition. As Jason and his fellow companions were returning home, they landed on the Greek island of Anaphe. There, Euphemus dreamt that he made love to a nymph and she became with child. Although his romance existed beyond the realm of the wake, he followed her plea to throw a clod of earth into the sea as part of her plan to escape the wrath of her father, Triton. A miracle ensued and out of the depths of the seas, Santorini emerged to provide shelter for the child bearing nymph. The son of Euphemus, who was born there, was named Theras and the island finally got his name, “Thera”.

Once you reach port we will escort you to your hotel and leave you to explore this spectacular destination with the multicolored cliffs soaring above the caldera, at your leisure. You will not be seeing us until the next day in the afternoon so enjoy your stay and exploration at your own pace, free of stress, and far away from the bustling city center of the capital.

Get lost in the traditional narrow stone walkways, forming a fairy-tale labyrinth within the main town of Fira, twisting and turning around the beautiful restaurants, cafes and shops catering to all your needs. Cut loose on the beautiful beaches, exploring the Red Beach and the Black Beach and relax as the setting sun paints the beautiful Santorini skies with broad strokes of violet and pink.

Choose one of the many elegant restaurants perched on the steep volcanic cliffs in Thira overlooking the breathtaking lagoon. Don’t forget to sample the worldwide acclaimed Santorini wines, as the island has a rich history of winemaking with hundreds of different wineries, traditional cellars and vineyards on black volcanic soils.

Santorini’s Centuries-Old viticulture goes back uninterrupted some 3500 years, and the island boasts some of the world’s oldest existing vineyards. You will certainly find something to entertain your palate among the Vinsanto, Athiri, Aidini, Assyrtiko or Mandelaria varieties from indigenous grapes.

This wonderful location is also featured among preferred gastronomic destinations for those eager to explore mouth-watering, savory delicacies. Make some room on your table for the local exceptional fava, delicious in all its manifestations, light sweet tomato and zucchini fritters (perfect for vegetarians), a side of eggplant dip (a vegetable favored by the volcanic soil), chlorotyri, the island’s famous sun-dried tomatoes and cured pork fillet in vinsanto wine with sugar and fennel seed. Many of the dishes include local aromatic herbs, peppers, onions and mint. If you have a sweet tooth, we recommend that you try the Kopania and the Melitinia.

If you enjoy digging into the past, why not include Akrotiri in your personal sigh-seeing route, located at about a half hour away from Fira by bus? It is one of the most important prehistoric settlements of the Aegean. The large area covered, the elaborate drainage system, the sophisticated multi-storeyed buildings with magnificent wall-paintings, furniture and decorative vases offer proof of its great development and prosperity. The town’s life was ended abruptly by the untamed volcano activity when ash heavily covered the entire island. The volcanic materials, however, have preserved the buildings and their contents up to date, much like Pompei.

We will meet you in the afternoon to transfer you back to port as you bid adieu to an island revered among the traveling community and often considered a worldwide bucket list destination for watching the sunset at Oia and enjoying some of the best diving in the world in the shipwreck-filled ocean bed around Santorini.

Tips by a local

Santorini, one of the most popular island destinations on the planet rightfully holds that title as it has so much to offer to any visitor. This is an unescorted tour, so we suggest that you explore the narrow cobble-stone paths all round Fira, and make sure to catch the sunset. There are so many nice restaurants and bars where you can try local food and wine that you will certainly find one to suit your taste. Why not choose one with a view in Fira, overlooking the lagoon; you will love the atmosphere there. Oia is also a great place to visit for an unbelievable view of the sunset or sunrise.
